Welcome from our chair of governors

I am glad to welcome you to this section of the website and introduce you to the school governors, our involvement in and responsibilities for the governance of the school and performance of our children.

Our role requires a delicate balance of strong support and critical challenge within the environment of a dynamic and improving school where everybody’s sole purpose is the all round development of our children in preparation for their secondary and further education.

We work closely with the Headteacher and staff to provide an excellent education for our children and strive to achieve their full potential academically and as members of the wider community so that they may become responsible and caring adults in the years to come.

The school offers a broad and balanced curriculum and the experienced staff are dedicated to working in partnership with the parents and children so they can provide each individual with the best education possible.

The school along with some parent volunteers organise a variety of fun activities during the school year and the funds raised help to provide support for the children with as many experiences as possible.

The governors come into the school as regularly as possible and we like to welcome parents and  friends so if you have not already experienced our school please call to arrange a visit and our headteacher will be delighted to show you around.

Ken Persaud

Chair of Governors

What is the role of a governor?

The school governors are volunteers from the local community. They are not educational professionals but people who have a genuine interest in education. They do not work as individuals but as a team, the governing body, providing strategic leadership and accountability in the school. The governing body acts as a ‘critical friend’ to the headteacher, with duties and responsibilities which include:

  • setting the aims and objectives of the school
  • setting policies in order to achieve aims and objectives
  • setting targets for pupil achievement
  • monitoring and evaluating the progress the school is making
  • managing the school’s finances
  • Making sure the curriculum is balanced and broadly based
  • appointing staff
  • reviewing headteacher performance and pay.

Governors are allocated a committee to sit on, according to their individual skills. These are the Resources committee, which encompasses finance and the maintenance of the school building and grounds, and Foundation, which is responsible for the Christian ethos of the school. Governors individually also have an area of specific responsibility, a ‘link’, to a particular area of the curriculum.

We meet as a full governing body eleven times a year, and also as committees and sub committees when necessary. A governor’s term of office is four years, and may be re-elected at the end of that term.
